26 Jan 2024I walked this from Clitheroe to Sabden on a bright, breezy, dry winter's day. The first 1.5km are urban pavement walking with a good surface. It then follows some good footpaths around playing fields before heading off across fields. There's a section to the north of Standen Hall which is criss-crossed with heras (construction) fencing. I guess this will be a housing estate in the near future which may affect the route. Beyond Standen Hall a good footpath takes you to a quiet B road before the tricky A59 crossing. This is a busy trans-pennine route and can be tricky to cross at busy times. A bit of road walking into the pretty village of Pendleton before a footpath heads off across fields to Wymondhouses. The path is poorly defined from here and the OS Maps app is useful in keeping on track. Beyond Wymondhouses the gradient increases, the surface deteriorates into tussocks of rush with waterlogged grass between. This is tough going as you ascend the nick of Pendle. The views at the top however are stunning on a clear day. The drop down into Sabden uses poorly defined paths with some rough, uneven grassy tussocks, eventually becoming easier underfoot. The final kilometre is along a decent footpath and then urban pavement to the car park opposite the White Hart pub. It's an easy walk at either end with a tough, steep kilometre over the Nick of Pendle. It's the best route there is from Clitheroe to Sabden.

07 Aug 2023Nice route avoiding roads. Clear footpaths. A bit wet in parts but to be expected given the wet July. Lovely views. Sheep and inquisitive cows in some fields.

30 Jun 2021This is a great route with a bit of uphill walking affording spectacular views across the Ribble Valley and Pendle. It starts by walking through some residential Clitheroe streets but you are soon out into the countryside. One disadvantage is that you need to cross the very busy A59. The route then goes through the lovely village of Pendleton before heading up the foothills of Pendle Hill which dominates the landscape in this area. I did stray from the route as the path becomes indistinct when you get on top of the moors but it was easy to get back on track. Eventually you drop down into Sabden. The route is pretty accurate. I would definitely walk it again and recommend to others.
