12 Jun 2023Fairly easy to follow route involving the towpath of the old Thames and Severn canal for a lot of the section from Cirencester to South Cerney. The southern section from South Cerney to Cricklade follows the trackbed of the old M&SWJ railway which is part of NCN45.
There are 4 kissing gates, 2 stiles, 2 sets of steps and 2 places where the path is restricted in width on the northern section making it unsuitable for wheeled transport. Crossing Bristol Road leaving Cirencester is best done using the subway slightly to the east of the roundabout. This exits into Kingsmead; from there the best route to reach Love Lane and the canal towpath is by using the path to Bridge Road, crossing this and then using paths and Nursery Close to reach the end of Elliot Road.
The southern section features 8 kissing gates but all of these can be avoided by remaining on NCN45 where it becomes a permissive path rather than joining the Thames Path. Cricklade would then be entered from the west on Stones Lane and Bath Road; the entire section is then available to people on wheels. Joining the Thames Path also means you pass through several water meadows which do their job and flood regularly.
There are two cafes on the outskirts of Cirencester in the Love Lane area and two pubs on the route at conveniently halfway in South Cerney.

27 Apr 2021Reasonable route using established long distance routes.
Once out of Cirencester this route follows the towpath of a disused canal as far as South Cerney Lockhouse. From there across fields to South Cerney village and then along a disused railway line to Cricklade.
The towpath and fields can get very muddy in wet weather and there are step stiles and kissing gates and a short flight of steps making it difficult for scooters and pushchairs.
The old railway line is much better as it part of the Sustrans cycle network. You do need to watch out for cyclists as it is flat and straight and they can go quite quickly
Consider staying on the Thames Severn way all the way to Cricklade.
