14 Mar 2024This route is a shorter and easier option than Chucla one, as there is negligible height difference; most of the route is flat, along the canal towpath. At any time of the year it will be drier and less muddy than Chucla one, although there are frequently puddles on the towpath, and in winter there may be short muddy stretches. The surface is generally better too, and there is no difficult road crossing. However, for wheelchair users the steep cobbled climb to cross the canal bridge on the Blackburn Road may be a problem, as well as the shorter one near ER Engineering.

28 Feb 2022From Church, the canal towpath is accessed via a quiet road and linking footpath. The towpath forms three quarters of the route, and is very pleasant with good views, although there is inevitably noise from the M65. There were some muddy puddles but these could generally be skirted easily. The roving bridge, just after going underneath the motorway, is used to change to the other side of the canal, and it and wharf buildings are interesting to see. The exit from the towpath into Clayton-le-Moors is via a cycle barrier.
