Description
I'm proposing Cawwhe two as a safer and pleasanter alternative to Cawwhe one, avoiding two miles or so of busy road walking. Cawwhe two follows exactly the same route as Cawwhe one between Cawood and Escrick, as I don't think this can be bettered, but between Escrick and Wheldrake it uses the quiet former access road to the disused North Selby mine and Benjy Lane instead of the busy B road further south

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 Apr 2024 (edited 03 Apr 2024)I walked the Cawood to Escrick section last August and the Escrick to Wheldrake section today (early April). I'm giving this whole route 4 stars as I believe it to be an improvement on Cawwhe one.
There's a lot of tarmac on this route, though a lot of it is quiet and low in traffic (e.g. the old railway line north of Riccall and the former access road to the disused North Selby mine). The rest is field paths and bridleways, some of which were muddy. There's a narrow footbridge and a kissing gate on the Cawood to Escrick section, sadly excluding some users. The most unsafe moment is crossing the A19 dual carriageway south of Escrick; there is a grassy traffic island in the middle which helps a little. The second location to be wary of traffic is road-walking the three quarters of a mile between Wheldrake village and Benjy Lane; this is a surprisingly busy road but there are wide verges here to step onto.
There is not a lot of waymarking but I found the route fairly straightforward to follow.
Riccall and Escrick were both well supplied with benches for a well-earned rest. Riccall had a couple of businesses open for refreshments when I walked through last summer, but sadly Escrick's pub and village shop (both on Main Street) are now permanently closed. There is, however, a convenience store at the service station at the northern end of Escrick village. The Wenlock Arms in Wheldrake is now showing limited opening hours.
Buses at each end run Monday-Saturday only.
