Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

03 Jul 2024I and two work colleagues walked this route today.
It was a hugely enjoyable route through pretty Surrey countryside, however the least enjoyable part was around Gatwick airport. We did however see two herons right next to the airport which was a surprise so close to a busy international airport.
The route is only suitable for walkers as there are quite a few stiles which would be difficult to use with a push chair, wheel chair or a bicycle.
We found that three of the stiles were in a poor state of repair and one had barbed wire right next to the highest point of the stile, please see the below photos.
The only other issue we found was that in some places the footpath signs were either missing or possibly hidden by the hedgerows, but we managed to find our way ok.
The walk would be particularly lovely when the bluebells are in flower. There were also some good points of interest on the route including some disused helicopters and planes, lots of farm animals and a visit to the Tanhouse Farm Shop and cafe (involving a very short deviation from the route), for a very welcome tea and cake stop.
The start and end points of this route are accessible by public transport.

11 Sep 2022I walked this on a 50/50 overcast sky on a Saturday afternoon, after a few days of showers. I walked this from Capel to Horley. Most of the path was easy going, with some muddy patches which I believe in winter could be lots trickier.
The route starts in Capel, where there is a pub. Most of the route goes through fields, and many of them have cows. I was chased by one near Tamhouse farm and decided to take a little detour. I saw a few deer, and foxes. After the cow encounter the route proceeds through fields and woods, and was generally very pleasant. Charlwood village has a pub for refreshments. After a little while along more fields (without cows), the route has a very small section of road walking along Horley Road near the western end of Gatwick airport. It is possible to jump through the woods, but the route has the actual paths. The section along the Mole around Gatwick's perimeter was very nice again. The last section is through Horley's residential streets before ending up at the station.
