Connect Capel with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Capel to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Capel’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
There were also some good points of interest on the route including some disused helicopters and planes, lots of farm animals and a visit to the Tanhouse Farm Shop and cafe (involving a very short deviation from the route), for a very welcome tea and cake stop....

Through Beare Green, the route is along a roadside pavement which continues beside the busy A24 for about 500m until just past the petrol station. That was the second lost pub I passed on the route from Horsham to Dorking. The route then takes you into Holmwood Common, an area criss-crossed with paths and trails where you can pretty much ramble where you like. You emerge from Holmwood Common by the church on the edge of North Holmwood. The route itself loses a star for me because of the road section around Beare Green and the confusion of paths through Holmwood Common....

Part one of a two-leg walk from Horsham to Dorking - CAPEHOR One. Once I got to Friday Street I decided not to take the diversion across to Kingsfold but took the path from Blackfriars Farm to the small hamlet of Friday Street to pick up the official CAPEHOR route again on the Sussex Border Path. I had to make a diversion to walk up Rusper Road to pick up the route at Pleystowe Farm. As a destination, Capel is an OK village with shops, a pub and is on a bus route from Horsham to Dorking. 40 minutes of urban walking at the Horsham end means the route is probably more satisfying South to North....

This is a great route for those wanting a taste of of Surrey Hills without the crowds of Box or Leith Hill. Suitable for all levels of walker - further more it finishes with a pub at the end and a bus back to the beginning....
Russell Bodycomb
The route crossed the A24 a couple of times, both points with good visibility both ways....

A great walk to see the town and countryside views of Dorking and Capel. Some overgrown footpaths and a field with some inquisitive calves to be aware of but nothing to diminish the enjoyment of the walk! On the route you’ll walk on pavements, through alleyways, footpaths, commons, fields and railway crossings as well as over the A24....

Jonathan Hitchinson added Dorcap three, a new walk from Dorking to Capel
Walk this routeI have lived in Horsham over 20 years and it was lovely to find and walk some new 'twittens' as part of this route. The Horsham to Dorking railway line has to be crossed twice on the route. The route ends in Capel which has a couple shops where drinks/snacks can be bought and also has a pub, 'The Crown', which could be a good alternative spot to stop for a drink/lunch/dinner etc. Capel is on the 93 bus route which links Dorking to Horsham....

I found this walk quite exhausting, the clay is very slippery to walk on and very sticky when standing still, I only fell over once and was lucky not to have my boots sucked off many times. This walk will be an entirely different experience when dry in mid to late summer. A section of suburban street walking heading North out of Horsham takes you past colleges and through quiet housing estates. There short sections of very quiet roads to walk along, a relief to walk on something firm. A better walk in summer I think, probably a 4*?...

Past Capel's beautiful church into fields, past Ruby's Café then along a busy road with a good pavement, Just past a petrol station (coffee!) there's a turn into more open fields. The station for Capel is at Ockley, just under 1km away, there is a footpath across fields from the dual carriageway crossing point to the church in Capel....

Most of the route goes through fields, and many of them have cows. After a little while along more fields (without cows), the route has a very small section of road walking along Horley Road near the western end of Gatwick airport....

I'm proposing Dorcap 2, which instead goes through the delightful Holmwood Common woods....

I walked this on an mostly overcast Saturday morning, from Dorking to Capel....

The detail of the route plotting could be improved, there are decision/ junction points at which the route is unclear (for example, the route around the church at the very end). Most of the route is on footpaths, the parts on road are on quiet roads and so quite suitable for walking with care. There are multiple stiles and uneven terrain so it may not be suitable for everyone....
