Pete

02 Sep 2023 Summer

Walked from Devizes to Calne on 1/9/2023.The climb from Devizes gave fine views from the top of Roundway Hill but after reaching the outskirts of Headington the walk deteriorated. The footpath at Church Farm,ST99966 66091was obstructed by large bales of straw and there appeared no way through, so the walk continued down the lane and turning first left brought us back on route. Several fields were then found to covered in tall maize and detours were made the get back on route.Stile in hedge ST99729 67643 was overgrown and difficult to get through. The path at copse ST 99819 68623 was non existent and after battling though past old pheasant fences and brambles there was no way through to route and again a detour was forced. The route from Headington spoilt what could have been a very pleasant walk.

The route is not straight forward to follow, some large fields and hills to cross. Good map reading and GPX helps. A part of route does not exist see map image where in April 2022 fence and hedge block path. Walkers need to be fit.

A few streets in centre of Calne are worth exploring and Devizes has much more including decent pubs and cafes. Once outside Calne there are good views in the direction of walk and some exceptional landscapes. Only the last two and half miles are good for wheelchair users and if going from Devizes to Calne give a view of Devizes White Horse.

Off route, and halfway, there are exceptional views from Kings Play Hill (access land), The Plantation, Beacon Hill (access land), and Roundway Hill Covert. These deviations make it five star for the fit and able.

23 Dec 2021 Winter

Route recorded by GPS as 7.45 mi, rather than 6.92 mi.
There are 13 stiles, 2 kissing gates, and 6 narrow bridges en route. There is the Ivy Pub and Convenience Store mid route ( check for opening days/times ) The paved sections in Calne and Devizes are fine, but Calne runs alongside the busy A4. The section between Calne and Heddington across fields is not the most pleasant experience, with paths running mid field across ploughed out paths, which in December is very muddy, with stiles in positions not shown on map. The section from Heddington onwards up to Roundway Hill makes up for the former,, with fine views in open expanse. The final section down to Devizes is good.
