Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

25 Apr 2021I completed this route from Stowmarket to Bury St Edmunds with a break point in Woolpit. At 25km it is a long route and is better broken up with Woolpit as a mid-point albeit its 9.5km from Stowmarket and 15.5km from BSE. The route is a mixture of waymarked footpaths, pavements and quiet country roads with no pavement. There are 4 stiles, 1 flight of steps, a barrel gate and 1 gate during the route, all featuring between the Drinkstone and Rougham stretch, plus a fair few footbridges. It is fairly narrow in places and the ground can be uneven on footpaths, especially crossing fields. There are 2 pedestrian crossings in total plus several road crossings to take care of. There is one major stretch of National Speed Limit road between Hessett and Rougham, most of which can be avoided by taking a waymarked footpath that also saves 400m. I will be posting an alternative route that in total would save nearly 2.0km without compromising safety or views. In terms of amenities, there are plenty at the start and finish points in Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds. Woolpit has a Co-op, 2 pubs (1 with overnight accomodation) a fish&chip shop and a bakery. Rougham has a convenience store en route for refreshments. I measured the route with GPS as 25.5km so a little over the recommendation. Overall its a nice route with several chuches passed, I especially liked the Estate at Rushbrooke with spectacular views and a field of horses by a lake. Its varied enough to keep it interesting.
