Description
Hi Bursta, thanks for the route Stanton to BSE, very much enjoyed it! I have uploaded an updated gpx file which avoids a stretch of private land - see pic. Can't seem to find the option to reverse the start/finish points so this actually runs BSE to Stanton but I think you'll get the picture. Thanks again and happy hiking, Lee

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

27 Jan 2024Walked this Stanton to Bury St Edmunds direction (can't find a route of that name - 2 x Bury St Edmunds to Stanton on Slow Ways site). Very good, enjoyable route, would recommend. Slight detour required where land owner has put up signs saying Private Land (no FP marked on OS), but just a right and 1st left along the road and you're back on track. 50/50 mix of quiet country lanes and footpaths, couple of busy A roads to cross and some terrain/gates not suited for wheelers. Great Route.

13 Nov 2022This route starts in the lovely town of Bury St Edmunds at the historic Abbey Gardens and is a lovely route along pavements and footpaths, crossing a railway line (take care, but I always find this quite fun to still be able to actually walk across a line) then quiet lanes and minor roads past Gt Barton church. (Along Green Lane soon after the church there is a footpath that the route currently doesn't follow as it's a dead end, but it is hoped that this will eventually link up with point no.7 and will then have provided another off road section). It then follows minor roads again until you have to cross the A143 between points 13 and 14. This is a busy 60mph road so I'd be worried about doing it on a weekday rush hour or a Saturday morning perhaps, as it's the main road into Bury. The visibility is good, but there's no traffic island, so you need to be quick. Ixworth is a lovely village - at this point we were ready for a coffee and a cake but couldn't see anywhere (I think there's a Courtyard Cafe but it may have been closed on Sunday? We didn't see it) There are two pubs so if you timed it for lunchtime that might be a plan! Just after point 15 is another busy 60mph road to cross, and then a long section of road with some bends where you have to be very aware of oncoming traffic. You then turn right onto Knox Lane and it is quieter and pretty, and there is an option of an off road section alongside the road for a bit. Unfortunately you have to cross the A143 busy road again at point 16 then you're in Stanton. I think if you were walking the route for fun/leisure it would be nicer the other way round to end in Bury St Edmunds where there is lots to do. The busy roads are off-putting, but manageable on a Sunday. There were no benches or decent resting places along the way but you could choose a pub if you timed it right.

17 May 2021This route is mainly lanes, so some hard surface walking, with some cross field paths. It takes in three delightful villages, and in Ixworth, as you walk down the High Street there are two pubs, a cafe and a small food shop. Some obstruction which narrows the pavement access in Ixworth, due to badly parked cars. Stanton and Ixworth are on a bus route.
