Description
This is a good dry-weather route between Brockenhurst and Totton. You can expect some great vistas, forest and lots of ponies.
Everyone in Brockenhurst and Totton should give it a go! Catch the train and then walk back again.
This route is more direct than Brotot, missing Lyndhurst and going through the forest instead.
4km of the route going in/out of Totton is on paths beside the busy A35. Aside from that stretch, most of the rest of the route is a beautiful journey through the New Forest.
The path floods south of Ashurst Lodge on the Beaulieu River after heavy or extended rains. Another route could be developed that avoids this by going through the Churchplace Enclosure

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

13 Nov 2023This route is great fun - especially the woods!
It had been raining a lot and so part of the route was flooded. I'm sure it's not always like that, but we had to step between some mini-islands to avoid getting wet feet. Other people would have had to get wet feet or divert another way.
I would have given the route 4 stars if it wasn't for this.
I agree with Dan that someone could suggest a wet-weather route that would be drier.

13 Nov 2023I loved walking this route and would 100% walk it again. I loved the views, forest, ponies and stars!
This is very nearly a brilliant route.
It was let down by the long stretch of walking on paths beside the A35 - but that was a small price to pay.
We walked this route at night after a long wet period. We faced two challenges, both 1-2km south of Ashurst.
Firstly, there was a bit of flooding on the Beaulieu River just south of Ashurst lodge. We made it through, but if you want guaranteed dry feet make sure you either 1) come after a dry spell or 2) go another way! Someone local will be able to upload a better wet-weather option. I'd not fail this route for this temporary issue... it's part of the nature of this environment.
Secondly, the path through Matley Wood is indistinct at times due to fallen trees and woodland growth.. but it's not too hard to re-find the path.
An alternative route going through Churchplace Inclosure might avoid both of the issues above.
I would certainly recommend this route - just come dressed for wet ground if it's been raining!.
