Description
Via West Hampstead, avoids (mostly) the Hendon Way.
In response to reviews of Brekil One which indicate a non-Hendon Way option may be appreciated, I've devised a more pleasant alternative route. The section from Kilburn to the Finchley Road is the same, but then it takes a more easterly course via Childs Hill Park (refreshments) and residential streets.

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

03 Apr 2024 (edited 04 Apr 2024)Walked from Brent Cross to Kilburn. A sound route, easy to follow.
Apart from two short sections on paved paths through Basing Hill Park and Childs Hill Park, this route is entirely on pavements, so no detailed description is necessary. There is plenty of interest and no shortage of shops, pubs and other facilities. The busy Hendon Way has a good pelican crossing, as do all of the other busy junctions, so it is also completely safe. I enjoyed the glimpse of Hampstead cemetery and the complicated rail geography of West Hampstead.

30 Mar 2024I did this as part of a circular route from Kingsbury via Brent Cross, Kilburn and Wembley, returning to Kingsbury. Public transport, cafes and shops are easily available. I downloaded the Slow Way GPX files to my OS app which worked very well. The route is well documented.
I enjoyed this short walk through parts of London which I don't know and which allowed me to walk through Kilburn again. I may return to explore Hampstead Cemetery which is on the route.

06 Mar 2022A good urban walk with plenty of refreshments and pubs. Avoiding Hendon Way is a must, but can't be totally avoided. There are also some hills involved, with some safe, but annoying, crossings of busyish roads.

14 Feb 2022I walked this route from Kilburn to Brent Cross.
From Kilburn its a pleasant walk through residential streets until the busy area around the triple West Hampstead stations. There are lots of cafes along this section, which extends past Fortune Green (Waitrose territory) all the way to the busy Finchley Road. There were some old fashioned underground Public Toilets open at West End Green. (This part is the same as Brekil One).
At Childs Hill the route turns off the Finchley Road and drops downhill to Childs Hill park. It's a pleasant green space, good for picnics, and also with a cafe on the far side. I met several friendly local people in this area, would recommend for a dawdle.
There's a short section through Basing Hill Park, and an even shorter one on the Hendon Way before turning off into residential streets all the way to Brent Cross. Some of these roads are rat runs, so there is still a bit of pesky traffic, but it's way better than the dual carriageway, and no further either.
Finally I arrived at Brent Cross station - Northern Line. I found that the buses aren't very good here, most of them go from the other side of the massive road junction.
Pavement/surfaced footpath all the way, no stairs. Nice and direct.
