Help connect Kilburn
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Kilburn’s Slow Ways.

I walked this from Kilburn High Road Station to Hampstead Heath Station. Out of Kilburn High Road Station turn right and right again....

From Kilburn High Road Station, you turn immediately right into the Belize Road and down the hill with the railway track on your right. You then turn right to cross a bridge over the tracks, then left through the Alexandra and Ainsworth estate. Turning back over the railway, at a large green roundabout you turn right into Belsize Road again. Turn left and you’re at Hampstead Heath station....

The initial 200m is a bit shoddy, but you soon enter quiet suburban streets and shortly after the lengthy canal side walk....

Maybe if you walked it at a quieter time of day (it was 6.30 pm) it would be less hazardous but the route is very desirable for commuters on bikes and there were a lot of them speeding along (many electric) so we couldn’t relax until we were off the canal and back on the roads....
Louise070
Most of the route is on pavements, but there is a short section on a good surfaced track through the park under Primrose Hill....
Hugh Hudson
Apart from two short sections on paved paths through Basing Hill Park and Childs Hill Park, this route is entirely on pavements, so no detailed description is necessary....
Hugh Hudson
A fascinating insight into old and new Kilburn and Queens Park before getting on the canal which is always a pleasure....
John Scott
I did this as part of a circular route from Kingsbury via Brent Cross, Kilburn and Wembley, returning to Kingsbury....
John Scott
Of course the OOC end isn’t finished yet - the route finishes/connects up with other Slow Ways at or around where the canal towpath reaches the A4000....
Jane Taylor
I wanted to stay walking along the canal but route takes you away to get to Kilburn. Lovely houses around Madia Vale !...
Laura Haigh
The stretch on the canal is the loveliest, and although I think I would prefer Kilcam 2, this one is also perfectly good....
Derick Rethans
It is now also possible to go from Hansel Road straight onto a new footpath towards Cambridge Road without having to take a zig-zag across Carlton Value....
Derick Rethans
It's not a bad route; it's direct, safe, accessible, and the part after Maida Vale is quite pleasant and attractive. I walked the big Maida Vale road on a Saturday evening of a bank holiday, so it was quiet, and the pavements are wide, so it really wasn't too bad. I definitely prefer Kilpad two, but this route isn't so bad, either!!...
mtormey
The alternative Kilpad two is much nicer, and is also less confusing near Little Venice. (Disclosure: I added that)...
Derick Rethans
The rest of the route is extremely pleasant and easy, albeit slightly uninteresting, residential street walking to Kilburn....
mtormey
Next follows a perfectly good though slightly uninteresting stretch of residential street walking. I'm almost certain that someone could devise a similar route that used generally the same approach but slightly different streets; overall, though, I think this is a perfectly good Slow Ways route, if you're (like me) a little uninterested in following the Grand Union Canal the whole way!...
mtormey
I especially like the way it goes through Paddington station along the platforms, on what iirc used to be a taxi road; the taxis could draw up more or less alongside the trains....
Jane Taylor
WHen you set off, the arch of Wembley station is quite visible, although it is obstructed by new high rises for quite a bit now too sadly....
Derick Rethans
Between Kilburn and Finchley Road it's fine, but Hendon Way was dreadful. Brekil 2 is a much nicer alternative....
Derick Rethans
A good urban walk with plenty of refreshments and pubs. Avoiding Hendon Way is a must, but can't be totally avoided. There are also some hills involved, with some safe, but annoying, crossings of busyish roads....
Derick Rethans
There's several ways to connect Wembley with Kilburn - this one has some strong points in the way it connects a number of North West London centres like a string of pearls along the way: Queens Park, Willesden Junction, Harlesden, Brent ......
Jane Taylor
If I had to pick my own route, I would have walked along the canal from the Outer Ring to Chalk Farm Road, but I don't think it is important enough to make a new route for this....
Derick Rethans
At Childs Hill the route turns off the Finchley Road and drops downhill to Childs Hill park. There's a short section through Basing Hill Park, and an even shorter one on the Hendon Way before turning off into residential streets all the way to Brent Cross....
Jane Taylor
Jane Taylor added Brekil two, a new walk from Brent Cross to Kilburn
Walk this routeThis is Kilham One, with the route fixed in places were it was impassible in Swiss Cottage, and with a alternative near Kilburn due to IMO a not-too-safe section....
Derick Rethans
From the canal it then goes through the residential Alperton and up to Wembley where the route finishes....

Walk this routeDerick Rethans added Wemkil three, a new walk from Wembley to Kilburn
Walk this routeIt is a good route, however, and you can continue along the canal to various places (Wemkil uses to same path for example) and it passes close by to other stations....
Strider
Some walking along very busy roads (A5 in Kilburn, central Harlesden, crossing the A406 on a footbridge), and a few busy 'town centres' with lots of people (not good if walking with dog(s) or pushchairs etc)....
RKB
Pavement walking, suitable for wheelchairs, wide smooth undulating paths away from the busiest of roads....
Strider
A reasonably direct, serviceable, Slow Ways route between two inner London stations, which will get you there with no fuss....
Jane Taylor
Generally wide streets and suitable for wheel chairs zig-zagging through the quieter streets....
Strider
This route quickly gets off the main road and goes past Maida Vale station along a road full of the bustle of everyday life....
Strider
When I walked it from Brent Cross on a Sunday morning, Hendon Way was thankfully a bit quiet, but it’s still a big, loud, and nasty road to walk along. The second half through West Hampstead, in contrast, is extremely pleasant and lovely urban adventuring....
mtormey
I walked this route from Kilburn to Camden and found it a really good urban Slow Ways route. The navigation is straightforward (even if the zig-zags are a bit annoying because you have to stick closer to a map!) and I loved taking the little diversion to head up Primrose Hill for a view of the city. A great walk....
mtormey
I liked the bit along the canal quite a lot, and then the walk through more residential neighbourhoods was quite pleasant, too. No complaints here! Great route....
mtormey
This route has two halves: one is from Kilburn to the canal, and then the second is along the canal. On the Kilburn half, the route mainly sticks to quiet residential areas, and I just loved the architecture of the buildings....
mtormey
My favorite part of the route was what felt to me like sneaking off the main road at the Kilburn end and emerging at the Kilburn High Road station!...
mtormey
I personally would probably use Kilcam 2 in future, but only because I don't want to repeat my own navigational error - this route is generally pleasant and safe....
lwatson
Lots of interesting sights, quiet residential streets, business districts, and green oases....
mtormey
The Grand Union canal, 60% of this walk, is lovely with birds and boats to see. Then a short residential street walk to Wembley....
Strider
I walked from Kilburn to Brent Cross. The first 3km is through well-to-do suburbia with pleasant roads and highstreets with a variety of shops and galleries....
Strider
There is a gated area near Hampstead but easily navigated around past the hospital there is a huge variety of architecture from cute Mews to the Brutalist Ainsworth estate....
Strider
This was a really easy route to walk through residential streets and with the advantage of two points of interest only a short detour away - 1. Abbey Road studios and 2. Primrose Hill where you can reach a fabulous viewing point over London....
Ian Metcalfe
Derick Rethans added Kilpad two, a new walk from Kilburn to Paddington Station
Walk this routeA pretty good route, but besides the bit along the canal, almost exclusively through residential areas....
Derick Rethans
I would probably also walk along Brondesbury Villas instead of Brondesbury Road, but that's just a small nit....
Derick Rethans
The Slow Ways network is future proofed and this Slow Ways node will be ready in 2026....
Slow Ways Cristie
This route takes you through many residential communities and connects two areas that aren't easy to navigate to on the underground. There are a couple issues with the route: I started at Hampstead Heath, and the route takes you through a private gated Mews....
