Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Bramley to Spencers Wood 2 (Bramspe 2) review.

A pleasant walk from Bramley train station to a Spencers Wood bus stop.

The Slow Way follows lanes out of Bramley, but soon becomes peaceful footpaths through farmland (Photo 1).

A lane north reaches a junction, and the route turns east to join the Roman Road ‘The Devil’s Highway’ between Silchester and London (Photos 2 & 3).

Much of the rest of the walk was familiar to me from the Slow Way Tadley to Spencers Wood (Tadspe 1). There was a slight difference in route, to visit a break point at The Elm Tree in Beech Hill (Photo 4).

A bridleway through woodland was inevitably muddy (Photo 5). A road bridge crossed the A33; pavement followed by a short stretch of narrow verge (Photo 6).

Spencers Wood has some amenities, such as a popular bakery near the end point of this Slow Way. The 600 P&R bus can take you the four miles into central Reading.

Spencers Wood to Bramley

I would fully have enjoyed walking this route if only the ground had been a bit drier. I followed it after a couple of rainy days and it showed. I consider myself lucky that I didn't slipped into the mud at any time. A warmer weather is really needed a couple of days before walking this route.
It is one of the quietest routes I walked in Berkshire and it leads mainly via shielded footpaths or quiet paved roads. The only spot where walkers need to be careful is when the route needs to cross A33 motorway. The Beech Hill Road doesn't always have a wide edge but the traffic was not too heavy when I walked there on a Sunday. When the route crosses the motorway and turns to the woods again there is a large pool of water and a wobbly branch across it. I had to prove my acrobatic skills to cross it.
I found it easy to follow the route. Many sections are straight and long.
There are pubs at the start and end settlement but to do shopping in a supermarket I had to do it at a forecourt at Three Mile Cross.
