09 Nov 2022I’ve had this Slow Way on my to-do list for a long time and wasn’t particularly looking forward to it, perhaps because it looks messily road-compromised on the map, but it is a varied walk which is much better than I expected, so it won me over and reminded me that such urban/rural hinterlands are often fun to explore.
I walked from Frampton Cotterell to Bradley Stoke. After several rainy autumn weeks and a deluge which was just abating as I started out, the section along the River Frome Walkway and the bridleway on up from there back into the village was, as promised by a previous reviewer, muddy, with some big patches of standing water to boot, but my feet (in heavy walking boots) just about stayed dry. And ongoing on from the B4058 (where I sat out the next sharp shower in a bus shelter), it is, also as promised, a nice walk across the fields.
Note that if you are walking in this direction, take care at the crossing of the B4057 (w3w client.shaped.silly). There is a short steep set of uneven steps which go straight down to the carriageway of the busy road, and the sight-lines, while adequate for a safe crossing, aren't perfect. Once across the road, walk along the pavement to reach the footpath into the next field. The OS map gives the impression that the path might be on the other side of the hedge, which it isn't.
Once under the motorway and across a further small remnant of countryside, the route enters the suburbs over a statement footbridge above the main road and takes a pleasurably quiet, often green and mostly off-road ramble between the housing estates and through a linear nature reserve along Stoke Brook (also muddy in places today but here there is a hard cycle track on the other side of the river if you wish to divert). It uses a mixture of cycle tracks, woodland paths, some old village roads, and inevitably a few little strands of the confusing web of alleyways that always make me grateful for my GPS in this area. There are, touchingly, still one or two of the old stone step-over stile and narrow slip-throughs left over from the days when these were footpaths through the fields before the area was gobbled up rapidly expanding Bristol in the 1980s.
Access in the country areas is mostly kissing gates, with a few climb-over stiles. One of these was missing its step, so was effectively a climb over a wooden fence.

05 Sep 2021This route uses tarmac footpaths and quiet roads through Bradley Stoke, before utilising footpaths over open fields to get to Winterbourne. Once there, a short walk down a residential road to join the Frome Valley Walkway to Frampton Cotterell. This can be muddy in wet weather, so be prepared! The path passes through a community orchard, before finishing at The Globe pub :) An enjoyable stop before returning to Bradley Stoke. This route is accurate, safe and should be verified.

02 May 2021Quiet path between Bradley Stoke and Frampton Cotterell-Winterbourne. Although the more direct route could be by the road side (pavement all the way) the suggested route is much more nicer as the road got a lot of noise and traffic. In Frampton Cotterell-Winterbourne there is a pub that can be seen from the end of the path with a big garden.
