Description
This route follows much of the River Blackwater running between Braintree and Coggeshall. We start by following the River Brain out of town and towards Tye Green Cressing. Leaving Braintree under Galleys Corner roundabout using the underpass, we join footpaths next to the Garden Centre going South West to the old part of Cressing. The beginning of this footpath is temporarily closed during building works at the time of writing, so detour along the B1018 through Tye Green Cressing and get back on the route at Wright's Farm.
Paths lead North from Glazenwood up to Bradwell village on the historic Roman road from Braintree to Coggeshall, now the A120. A very short walk along pavements leads to the best part of this route, a long winding footpath that follows the River Blackwater all the way to Coggeshall.
Large houses next to the very old barns bring you into the outskirts of Coggeshall, and from here we head North across Long Bridge and the Blackwater. Alternatively you cross the road at this point and follow the footpath along a track towards Monk House and impressive remains of a Cistercian Abbey. This is fine in Summer, but during the Winter the onward footpath is ankle deep in mud.
We follow narrow streets up to the centre of Coggeshall, a fantastic old wool trading town with lots of pubs and shops to investigate

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Jan 2024This is a lovely walk along the River Blackwater. You may have spotted it from the busy A120, but it's surprisingly secluded and tranquil down in the bottom of the valley. As you get closer to Coggeshall the valley opens out and you are higher up with wonderful views. Most of this walk is along farm tracks and decent footpaths. During extremely wet periods the river might flood the lowest paths, but locals always find another way through, so follow their tracks.
If you get halfway and feel the need for refreshment, there is a big garage with a good shop on the A120, on the edge of Bradwell. Coggeshall is delightful though, with all the cafes, pubs and restaurants you could want.
I created Bracog Two to avoid some horrible roads sections in another version. Admin suggested I put up a review because these walls are all on my doorstep.
