Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This route rises above Betws-y-Coed via a wide path through a forest with many wooden seats, benches and inspirational messages along the way. There is, however, a crossroads approx. 1.3km behind Betws-y-Coed where the route continues straight ahead instead of continuing along one of the wider paths. I couldn't find the route through the woods there so I walked on along one of the wide path. It looked like an inaccurate selection of waypoints. There was a similar inaccuracy on the other side of the hill where the route goes through a railway underpass and rises uphill again.

The next section was quite enjoyable, mostly next to the railway line down to Dolwyddelan. There is a shop in the village not far from the route.

When I left Dolwyddelan I tried to find a place where the route was supposed to cross a stream. I found no path leading to the spot indicated by the route and no bridge was in sight either. There were just huge boulders and it would be dangerous to crawl over them even with a low water level. I went on along the gravel road through the valley and uphill.

When I reached the top of the ridge and crossed several wooden steps along a wired fence the footpath practically disappeared. I had to walk on a very uneven ground full of turfs, moss, blueberry bushes, grass and a soggy layer underneath. It was ideal for twisting an ankle. The rest of the route was mostly on this unwelcoming ground. It would be strenuous or even risky for anyone without sturdy shoes. The views of the surroundings were magnificent, though.
