Description
This route avoids some unsafe or uncomfortable road crossings from BisSta 1, 2 and 3 using guidance from local resident Vic - see the BisSta 1 page. It has 2 or 2.5km less pavement and road walking than BisSta 2 or 3 respectively, perhaps because it uses footpaths along the River Stort that creators Dan and Mary were not aware of - they aren't on Ordnance Survey maps. And it's only half a mile longer.
It starts along the tow-path in central Bishop's Stortford, goes past a ruined castle then a long stretch alongside the river and the flood meadows, mostly using "Waterside Stortford" a waymarked local route. Then just half a mile on some B-roads - with pavements and decent crossings. Shortly after crossing the A120 it turns onto footpaths, goes through Birchanger village (no shop or eating place but the no. 7 bus route and a couple of B&Bs). This route then joins BisSta 2 and the rest is along footpaths through fields or woods crossing one road (traffic island) until very close to the centre of Stansted and the train station

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
