20 Dec 2023I walked this route from Retford. The route joins the canal bank a short distance from the town centre, and then heads across the cemetery to North Road. After a short traverse of a housing estate (on quiet roads) the route enters the Idle Valley reserve. Good paths lead generally north-westwards (although after the rain we've recently had the surfaces were muddy) and then follow a well defined path close to the railway. The route crosses the main railway line at Ranskill crossing. A short residential road leads to the old A1 (Gt North Road) - where the Blue Bell PH provides refreshment. A short distance along Blyth Road leads to Bishopfield Lane. This heads across country to meet the minor road which skirts Serlby before crossing the A614 and heading for Bircotes. The section west of the A614 is much busier with some heavy traffic short-cutting away from the A1. The last section is around an industrial estate and along Scrooby Road through Bircotes. There are not many footpaths in this part of Nottinghamshire so between a third and a half of the route is on tarmac. The sections between Retford and Ranskill and between Ranskill and Serlby are scenic countryside (If you like bleak wetlands). The rest is a functional route.
