16 Jan 2022Lovely walk through woodland and farmland. However, this is on Wealden clay and sections are very muddy and slippery after wet weather. I walked this on a sunny day in January. Sections on bridleways heavily used by equestrians, particularly in the woods near Southwater, were very churned up. As such I think this would be a grade 4 walk in winter. Billingshurst centre has been used as the hub point but with a slight diversion the route could start or finish at Billingshurst Station, where there are a few facilities for refreshment.

23 Oct 2021Horsham to Billingshurst via Southwater on 22/10/2021. Leg Two BILSOU.
I really liked this walk. It leaves Southwater by Blinks Wood and follows various footpaths and bridleways through the woodland of the Dragons Estate. Paths are well-maintained and easy to follow, but there are also a multitude of non-public estate paths too. I found that satnav was helpful to make sure I chose the right path.
The countryside was peaceful and pretty for the whole route up to and including the outskirts of Billingshurst. After some days of quite heavy rain, the bridlepaths in particular were starting to get a bit churned up and muddy. However it is a rural route through Wealden Clay country so expect stiles, gates, narrow footbridges, steps and mud at any time of the year.
The path is well marked on the map and mostly easily followed on the ground, although satnav helped. There are no shops or refreshments along the way.
