Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked from Batley to Morley. Excellent route, a classic ‘up and over’ coming up from the milltown in the valley to open agricultural land on top, before dropping down to Morley.

A steep slope climbs out of Batley, including steps and cobbles (photo). A country path leads to a railway crossing (bridge). After the bridge there are a couple of houses, the route goes left along the road towards the railway tunnel, then just before the tunnel take the clear path on the right up the hill (3rd photo).
(A local man said there are plans to close the bridge crossing.)
Look back as you climb the hill to get lovely views.
At the top of the slope the path bears left, there is a slightly tricky section where it goes over uneven ground and drops down steeply on a narrow wooded path, but it doesn’t really disappear completely!
Next is a golf course. The route goes onto the car park and then along the access road, so some cars.
After a short stretch of busy road there is a path across fields to a motorway crossing. Then urban into Morley, including a nice town park (benches) and a shopping centre (toilets).
The meeting point at Morley is at a statue of Ernie Wise who apparently got his big career break in the town.

I enjoyed this walk and recommend it is in the Slow Ways network.

Just to clarify, Ernie Wise (or Morecambe and Wise fame) was brought up in East Ardsley, one of the 'outliers' of the then Borough of Morley (since absorbed into the greater Leeds conurbation) - hence the statue being in Morley town centre.
I also understand that the view from the hills between Morley and Batley were described by Daniel Defoe as one of the best views in the Pennines (I assume that was in 'A Tour thro' the Whole Island of Great Britain' (1724–1727), which provided a panoramic survey of British trade on the eve of the Industrial Revolution.)
