26 Nov 2022I always like a canal route – so quick and easy (although I also enjoy the map-reading challenges of trickier routes). I think this one could probably be made fully accessible simply by continuing a short way further along Long Ing Lane from Barnoldswick, beyond the Silentnight factory, to access the towpath via a slope. The towpath is well surfaced all the way.
However, this route turns in front of the factory and enters a wooded footpath (muddy when I walked it) around the perimeter of the factory grounds, and over a bridlepath bridge to access the towpath.
There are plenty of boats moored along the first section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. About 40% of the way along the route is Salterford, which has public toilets, and a pub, picnic tables, and a bench.
Along a lot of the canal there are good views across the valley to the hills beyond Earby and Kelbrook. The route leaves the canal just before Foulridge Tunnel (worth a few extra meters walk to have a quick look), for the short walk up the road to the end point.
