Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

06 Jun 2024If arriving in ASKERN by car, turn from A19, down Moss Road. Look on the right for a road sign-Spa Pool Road. Turn down this road, go about 10 metres, t. hen turn right into funeral director’s car park. Go straight through this car park to LAKE CAR PARK. This is a free car park.
Walk back to Moss Road and turn right. Walk along this road until you reach Fenwick Lane on the left. Walk along Fenwick Lane to the railway level crossing. It is a quiet lane with many farms on both sides. Randall Farm, Ladythorpe Farm, Fenwick Farm and Went Farm,
Do not go over the level crossing, but take a public footpath on the left which runs parallel with the railway line. This is the East Coast Main Line (London to Edinburgh) and you will soon experience a Woosh! as one of many trains speed along. If you are into trains, this is certainly the walk for you.
Keep on the footpath, crossing the bridge over the River Went and then turning right on Lowgate BALNE and follow this road all the way to the canal bridge. There is no pavement but it is not a busy road, mainly the occasional farm vehicle. BALNE is a hamlet of many farms.
When you reach the canal bridge do not go over. Take the road on the right that slopes down to the canal side. At the lock, cross the canal to the other side, turn right and then enter the farmyard of Manor Farm, following the drive and turn right onto Main Street POLLINGTON.
Turn right on East End and then left and right onto Berridge Lane. Turn left at Carr Lane and left again at Finnleys Lane. This will take you to a bridge over the M62. If you stand on the right hand side of the bridge, you should be able to see a circle of. tall trees. They mark the spot where there was a Royal Hunting Lodge in medieval times. King Edward II converted it into a Manor House. It stood on a moated island and parts of the moat are still there today.
Carry on walking along Finnleys Lane and look out on the left for a Trans Pennine Trail sign. Turn left on the footpath which leads to Spa Well Lane and passes a former brewery and boasts a Blue Plaque.
At the end of the lane turn left on Cowick High Street which merges into Butt Lane. Continue on Butt Lane to the Main Road where you need to turn left and then right at the mini roundabout and then left into Market Place, where you will reach your destination. Traffic can be busy at the mini roundabout, so we recommend the nearby pedestrian crossing.
A very enjoyable walk through the countryside.

05 Jun 2024Setting off from Askern Lake follow Station Road through the town, and into open countryside towards Moss. A fairly busy road, with a pavement on one side only. Turn left into an unmarked road near the “50” mph sign. Beware of traffic as there are no pavements on this road, towards Fenwick. Open countryside views on both sides, you will pass Fenwick Farm and Went Farm. When you reach the level crossing, take the footpath to the left just before the crossing, walking along parallel to the railway. This path is uneven and fairly overgrown, not suitable for any wheelchairs/pushchairs etc. Cross over the River Went at the footbridge, but beware of loose handrails over the steps on each side of the bridge. Continue to the road and turn right past Lockgate Farm, passing over another railway crossing. A pleasant walk with open countryside both sides, passing through Balne, and on to Pollington.
At the junction by the school, turn right towards the bridge, and take the footpath to the right leading to the lock on the Aire and Calder Canal. Cross to the other bank at the lock (picnic tables located here if you need a break!!) Follow the canal to the swing bridge just beyond the lock, taking the route to your left through the farm, and into Pollington. Turn right the route takes you through the village, turning right onto Berridge Lane and on to link up with Finlays Lane, passing over the M62 and into West Cowick. You turn left along through West Cowick and into Snaith, finishing your walk at the Fire Station.
Overall the route was safe. However there were big stretches where I was walking on minor roads with no pavement. The traffic was very light but care needs to be taken. It was an enjoyable walk with open countryside on both sides for most of the walk. I would certainly walk this route again.

11 Aug 2023This walk uses quite a lot of minor roads(without pavements) but they are not busy roads and I felt safe walking on them. The walk crosses the River Went which is pleasant and there is another pleasant section alongside a canal.
