Description

Alternate route from Arundel to Worthing addressing issues reported with ARUWOR One around Angmering and Lyminster. It utilises an official road crossing of the A259 at the Roundstone roundabout. I have also incorporated the Ilex Way between Ferring and Goring ... because I like it!

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Walked on 28/05/23 and route still blocked between Poling and Lyminster - not looking like it will be clear any time soon! Heading south where the path is closed adds km's to your journey, but will have you joining back up with the route the other side of the blockage. For something more direct, it is possible to go past the location of the 'Road Ahead Closed' sign, and head North on a public footpath across fields, which will bring you out near the Brewhouse Project pub. From there the route runs along the street into Arundel. Depends how long you have and how much your feet hurt by that point!
The only other small blockage we found was crossing the road at the roundabout on the A259, although works there were all but done, and we found our way across by a slightly alternative route easily enough.

The route is a mixture of street and dirt paths, mainly. There are plenty of styles/kissing gates/etc., and at one point a field of cows with their calves, which we traversed with no bother. We went after a day of rain and there were lots of puddles and some flooding, but nothing that stopped us getting through - just meant swerving to avoid some areas and a reliance on waterproof footwear in others!

Walking through Ferring County Centre fields feels wrong, but public footpath so no problem, and gates are easy to find, diagonally across the field. Be careful crossing the train track! It's a proper crossing but relies on you being very aware of trains.

The prettiest part is through Poling, where the path naturally runs through a churchyard, and beside some idyllic country gardens/properties.

A pleasant, manageable and (above-mentioned blockages considered) straightforward route.

Heads up straight away. This route is currently (20-06-2022) blocked along the lane between Lyminster and Poling at the Lyminster end. This is likely to be so for several months while the Lyminster by-pass on the A284 is under construction. Consequently a lengthy and rather tedious detour is required through the housing estates under construction at the northern edge of Littlehampton.

However in the long-term this will probably be the best walking route between Arundel and Worthing. I pioneered it on 20th June and apart from the blockage mentioned above, everything else worked OK.

There are plenty of stiles on the route, particularly at the Arundel end. The fields between Arundel and Lyminster are home to herds of cattle. Angmering, at the half-way point has shops, cafes and pubs. Plenty of public WCs on the seafront at the Worthing end starting with the cafe by the roundabout at the end of Sea Lane.

The chosen crossing point for the A259 is at a roundabout and is an official spot, although there is no zebra crossing or traffic lights for assistance.

The 4* rating for the route is for when the temporary blockage is removed.
