Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

24 Aug 2023This is a gorgeous route that was a real pleasure. I walked it on the end of a sunny and hot day, with the sun coming down behind me as I walked into Eastbourne. I agree with the other reviews and would certainly walk it again.
Everyone in Alfriston and Eastbourne should give it a go!.

27 Feb 2023Beautiful route with gorgeous views of the South Downs and the coast! I did this from Eastbourne to Alfriston as part of a long trail run (to Lewes) to work in a few hills in my training. For anyone seeking out hilly runs near London, this one is definitely a good option, and if you're looking to go longer, you can connect to other Slow Ways or do a few circuits for additional distance/ascents.
Following mainly the South Downs Ways, the path is great for walking and running, solo and for groups. The paths are quite wide and plenty of room for sauntering and chatting and the route mostly easy to navigate. Alfriston is a great little town, and Eastbourne has a lot of options for refreshments, food, and other public facilities.
Some things to note:
- I did a slight variation around Eastbourne to see if it might be a quieter option than the main route through Old Town. From doing that and reading the other review, I would go with the route marked out here. Though I did get a lovely view from the golf course when I joined South Downs Way earlier, going through Old Town is probably more interesting since you'll get great views anyway when you do eventually join the South Downs Way.
- As a runner, it's great to get into a rhythm, so I didn't realise how many different South Downs Way options there were and consequently went 2km out of the way at Alfriston and ended up in Litlington! It's my own mistake for zoning out and just following the first South Downs Way arrow, and I don't think this is common, but thought I'd mention it just in case! =).

27 Aug 2022Leg one of a yomp from Eastbourne to Seaford via Alfriston.
I am really surprised that somebody hasn't already reviewed this one. There really isn't anything to criticise about this route. It heads out the the centre of Eastbourne along roadside pavements through the old town, past some interesting medieval buildings. The road climbs up past the youth hostel where we take a bridle path to continue up to the golf course. At this point the route connects with the South Downs Way and follows it all the way to Alfriston (apart from a short-cut across a field at Lullington) near to Alfriston.
This is the South Downs Way. It is used by dozens of walkers and cyclists every day (more in summer and at weekends). It is well way-marked and easy to follow, usuable all year round. There are no stiles, but you are sure to come across sheep and cattle along the way. This is a working farmed landscape.
There are lots of marvellous views. I particularly enjoyed the descent into Jevington, but my photos (#6 and #7) don't do it justice. There is a pub in Jevington (the Eight Bells) not sure about a shop, no other facilities along the way.
