Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

The Rheidol valley had no road access at the east end, so although lots of this walk is on its narrow country lane it is really quiet, and easy strolling, and if a resident does drive past you can hear them coming a way away. It gets a bit busier after the Aberffrwd turnoff (although not at night! We walked this in the small hours, by moonlight!) but the road also gets wider, so it's ok. There's pavement at the Capel Bangor short section of A-road, and then a car-free section of multi-use path from the industrial estate to Aberystwyth.

I've not done Abedev two yet, and know it needs some tweaks, but it'll make the basis of a good Abedev four for a more off-road route. I think this one deserves to exist for anyone who needs easy swift road walking that doesn't take any thinking! If it wasn't for the woodland section at the east end it would be cyclable throughout, and there is a Sustrans route that remedies this.

In the daytime, look out for nice things along the route, like the Cwmrheidol waterfalls, the Statkraft visitor centre which has a cafe (check opening times though), and the nextdoor butterfly house (ditto). There are also several Rheidol steam railway stations near the route, very picturesque.

I walked this route with Hannah from Slow Ways at night, starting at Devil's Bridge and hiking to Aberystwyth.

It's an easy route to follow and I really enjoyed it, but some people may not be comfortable with all the lane walking. Only a small number of cars passed us and there was always room to step off the road.

It's an easy to follow route with some great views.

I am sure there is a better (daytime!) way to the south of the river. Abedev Two may be a better trail walk and if not, maybe someone could suggest another better way to go.

I'd be very pleased to walk this route again!

(More to follow, including some photos).
