The first 40% of the route was easy going, soon crossing under the railway and A55, near Penmaenmawr Station, then proceeding along the coastal cycle track. The road route into Conwy was short and interesting, going through the castle wall gate to the end point at the town square, opposite the station....

This route is a mile longer than the coastal route, and climbs steadily up and back down about 1100 feet or 340 metres. Overall, this was an utterly gorgeous route, in good weather....

Start/ finish next to Conwy Train Station and the finish/ start is very close to Penmaenmawr Train Station. Outside of both towns, where it was quiet road walking, the route climbs to 3/4 way up Conwy Mountain by a stony track....

I wasn't too keen with the route offered along Treforris Road and Conwy Old Road as a way of getting from Dwygyfylchi to Penmaenmawr, although it's fair to say that Treforris Road is a quiet one-way road and Conwy Old Road isn't too busy. There are regular daily trains and buses linking Conwy and Penmaenmawr....

Walk this route if you're keen on civil engineering, because you'll appreciate the sheer skill that went into designing the road and railway, getting it around (or through) a formidable rocky headland....

I am not sure that the route selection is optimal - between Penmaenmawr and Dwygyfychi we gain quite a lot of height only to lose it all, and the choice of paths over the hill should stick to one of the two main paths rather than switching from one to the other on a little used and uncomfortably narrow path through the heather. From the meeting point in Penmaenmawr, we go down Ffordd Bangor then go straight on across the junction, bearing right up Old Conwy Road. Eventually the road turns sharply right and our path takes the track straight on, soon becoming a narrow and rough path that climbs steeply up through the heather to a T junction accessed via steps....

The GPX plotting is a little vague, but essentially we keep to the roads and tracks nearest to the A55 until we see the rather impressive new cycle track which crosses half of the A55 just before the tunnel entrance, and looks down on the other half. We follow the cycle track onto a road, and where it crosses the A55 we stay left following the surfaced path along the top of the beach....

Roughly a 5k route, relatively flat for the area as it is close in proximity to the sea. - This route is reasonably safe but wheelchair/mobility scooter users should be aware that a few difficult curbs may require a detour but do not prevent access to the route and there are slopes along the way....
