Help connect Haddington
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Haddington’s Slow Ways.

I won't repeat the comments noted in the largely similar version one, but in general it is a good rural route. 2 The field at Penston: I walked round the edge as recommended, but the farmer clearly doesn't want people to use this route, since the gate at either end was tied shut....

It's a bit wilder than the John Muir Way which I followed in the morning (Easdun one) but it's still easy to follow along the River Tyne....

The next section of the route is along a minor public road without verges so care has to be taken of traffic. The finish of the route diverges from Lonhad Two at Lower Alderston Road. There is no access on to Hospital Road from the route shown on the Slow Ways map going along the north side of the hospital building....

If you start from the B1377 to the east of the station car parks, take the track signed "access to railway walk". The route is very clear and easy to follow apart from locating the path for the section east from Somnerfield Crescent. You need to go between 10 and 12 Somnerfield Crescent into the park beyond and follow the path through the park....

Lovely peaceful farm tracks and woods included in the walk...

grussell added Lonhad two, a new walk from Longniddry to Haddington
Walk this routeI have added an alternative route following the complete railway path and providing another route into Haddington as this one goes through Roodlands Hospital (not walked by me)....

Going through the Winton Estate there is a large 'private' sign near the house but there is a path to the right that comes out on an estate road. The most challenging part of the walk was the path from Newbold Revel to Letham Mains....

2) The route takes a left turn just as you enter Backburn Wood - I couldn't find this path using OS maps (it may have been earlier than I realised) and instead followed the well-marked path through the wood and then rejoined the route via the road at the end of the wood. This did not add any distance as I was walking parallel to the official route and was a pleasant alternative....

Tim Sharp added Trahad two, a new walk from Tranent to Haddington
Walk this route1) The track marked on the OS map in Penston field does not exist. When I walked it, it was a ploughed field, presumably there will be some sort of crop here later in the spring. Go South and then West along the field edge to get to Butterdean Wood....

I walked this on a sunny April day after a bit of rain the previous week and while most of the route was dry there were a few bits that were very waterlogged, so boots are a must! When you come out of Haddington Wood at Letham Mains, the route tells you to go straight on and go through the farm at the bend in the road. Those two bits aside, it’s a good route....

The route follows the road bridge over the River Tyne ontoWhittinghame Drive (signed for golf course) , and then left (photo 1)after passing the cemetery onto another footbridge over the Tyne again and then right across some grass to follow path into fields(photo 2). It become signed as 'River Tyne path' from the Abbey Bridge (photo 3) as it is from East Linton....

The route takes you past some beautiful old mills, a nice horse, and the amazing Hailes castle - well worth a quick detour to the other side of the river to poke around the castle itself....

There is also a bus service between East Linton and Haddington, (Borders Buses 253 and East Coast Buses X7)....

ewan davidson added Penhad two, a new walk from Pencaitland to Haddington
Walk this routeThen the route from the edge of Winton Estate to Boggs Holdings involves around a mile along the narrow verge of a fairly busy B road, there is an alternative route through the woods from that junction and then a marked path up the Dean Burn to the community hall ( adds about 1 km to route)....
