14 Dec 2021Nearly all off road but steep narrow paths in some places. Excellent views but muddy in winter not easy to navigate in parts even with OS map. Excellent pubs in wirksworth and good bus network.

20 Aug 2021Wirksworth is a lovely small town so I'm sorry to be leaving, first over a hidden rail tunnel to the old quarry then under an unrecorded footbridge. Old Lane, again unrecorded but well used and subject to an application to be added to the footpath map. You may hear rather than see the train.
Many paths through the Stone Centre so care is needed the plot is fair here. Crossing the B5035 the route uses another unrecorded path, Dark Lane, but it was okay. The path along the quarry edge is enclosed but interesting. I made a mistake crossing the quarry approach road and got sprayed with water.
Knowing the area I would prefer to walk down The Hill into Cromford for services in the village centre. This route is fine past the site of the old church. The plotting around the A5012 Water Lane is poor you need to take Scarthin then a paved path up the side of a cottage to double back behind the cottages. Again it's unrecorded see https://apps.derbyshire.gov.uk/applications/right-of-way/details.asp?appID=04300 for details.
I love walking the narrow steep twisting roads above Matlock Bath so may offer a revised route, watch for details. The path follows close to the plot but better to rely on what's on the ground. This route climbs high and passes through the grounds of Heights of Abraham where folk have paid to enter by means of the cable car.
A good walk with plenty on offer for a break at Cromford which is about half way. Trent Barton bus offers ride back.

26 Jun 2021Beautiful quiet walk with quite a bit of up and down but cafes and pubs and carparks beginning, middle and end. Lovely views, woods, meadows, dramatic cliffs. Skirts an awesome quarry and has good paths throughout with almost no road walking. A Derbyshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve 'Gang Mine' is on the route and the National Stone Centre. Between Matlock and Cromford I took a favourite alternative path half way up the hill which avoids going up so high and is beautiful though the woods then a lovely, quiet dead end road to Upperwood. At the Wirksworth end is worth avoiding the road and taking a route through Stoney Wood.
