17 Jul 2023Walked in July 2023 - Wilmslow to Macclesfield. Took about 3 hours, including a short break in Prestbury. The route is basically the Bollin Valley Way and is generally well signposted, but there are bits where a map will help out. Overall - a very good walk, nothing too hard or strenuous.
Care is needed on Mill Lane as there are two options either side of the bridge as you exit it; take the one on the right. Care is also needed on the golf course, the exit is a concrete path which you turn left off and onto a small bridge (pictured). More generally, there are a few footpath signs but you need to keep your eye out for the Bollin Valley Way signs.
The finish in Macclesfield uses busy roads, perhaps the route would be better from Macclesfield to Wilmslow. I was able to get back to Wilmslow using the 130 bus from Macclesfield, all very easy.

05 Feb 2023Another example in favour of making sure a route is reviewed in both directions! I was willing to forgive the vague plotting at the church at Macclesfield because when faced with a high wall it was obvious that I needed just to walk around. However, there is a section just to south of Prestbury where you are instructed to leave the main footpath and follow a track to cut off a corner of the route. The reality is that now, there is no track, as the area has become a scrubby wetland that clearly floods. As soon as I got the chance, I tried to get back on track but found myself on the wrong side of a fence, behind which the actual footpath was running. This was enough to fail the route, but to make matters worse, having got the other side of Prestbury, the route again directs you away from the well marked footpath to... a fenced off field. Unacceptably poor plotting.

28 Aug 2021Nice easy route, Especially as far as Prestbury (good for a coffee stop). Up to Prestbury it is a mixture of fields and woodland beside the river Bollin. The signposting is pretty good (7/10) but you do need an OS Map. This is especially the case when crossing Mill lane (near Mottram Hall) as I think one of the local large houses has taken down a sign. The route is less good as you get into Macclesfield as it is far more industrial/residential. I would suggest just sticking to the Wilmslow to Prestbury section. It takes approx 2 hours of brisk walking.
