Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Today I walked this from Kineton to Whitnash, following the route outlined here as closely as possible. You get to see two windmills on this route, an old well, three old churches and if you time your walk right, The Antelope pub is almost half way along the route at Lighthorne village. There are also some great views when you reach some of the high ground.

There are some lovely little villages on the route, namely Lighthorne & Chesterton. You also walk through a couple of working farms, and there are plenty of gates, stiles and small footbridges on the route. The narrowest part is 52cm, being a small footbridge (pictured) on the way into Lighthorne.

Generally it was clearly signposted, although there are sections which are a bit tricky to find and slightly overgrown. Nothing too bad on the whole, but definitely some paths which don't appear to be trodden very often. There are approximately 15-20% of the route on roads. Generally these were quiet when I did my walk, but you do need to take care.

There was just one section I couldn't follow, the footpath which is supposed to run parallel to the Chesterton Road. I couldn't find the route from the car park by the Lighthorne Pavillion Cafe. It wasn't a disaster to divert along the road, but it did mean walking an extra 400m (approx.) on the road.

If the route didn't have so many road sections, and if it was a little clearer both in terms of signage and undergrowth, it would have got five stars. Also, if you're not too bothered with purity of sticking to the exact mapped route, I would recommend taking a diversion from walking the mapped route through Pounce Hill Farm, and take the route over Crown Hill instead. In my opinion, the view from the top of Crown Hill is definitely worth the slightly longer diversion and extra effort to climb (it's only 101m). On the whole though, I did really enjoy this walk.
