Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A good route, accurate and easy to follow. Helpfully it stays on the Crab and Winkle Way all the way to Uni of Kent campus. That's a tarmacked or compacted gravel surface all the way, which was welcome as the ground is saturated with standing water in fields, woods, gardens, parks. There's one point in the middle third where, on the OS map it seems that this route veers off the C&W while all the other routes stay, but in reality this route is the C&W, signed and surfaced.

And in Whitstable all the other WhiCan routes go down an impenetrable alleyway, from the density of the woody growth I'd say no one has been through for 2 or 3 years but oddly very few of the reviews mention it.

The choices of how to get through Whitstable and Canterbury are ideal if you are running, as they both avoid the roads with busier pavements. In Canterbury there were a lot of closely spaced turns and perhaps it would have been a little simpler to go along one of the other routes there, maximise the time in the most scenic parts of the city centre. The Whitstable end was very straightforward but WhiCan 2 goes along the harbour which is touristy and pretty. The high street might be a nice choice too.

Likewise you could have a mid route detour to visit one of the pubs or shop (is there a tearoom?) in Blean using WhiCan 1 or 2 as a guide.

This is all very subjective though and it'd be very easy to figure out the changes for yourself so it doesn't take away from the rating of this route.

The urban section from the Uni to around Canterbury West station was the muddiest on the whole route. There's a stile and inverted V motorbike restrictions in a few places.

I intend to add photos and flesh this review out a bit later in the week.
