Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Oct 2022 (edited 26 Oct 2022)A good route with mostly great five-star walking. It heads out from Wedmore up and along the line of a low ridge for a couple of miles with long views of the country around before descending and making its way to Glastonbury via the levels, where it passes through the reedy Westhay Moor nature reserve (with hides just off the path where you can watch all sorts of interesting birds) followed by farmland with many lush meadows and cattle-grazed pastures.
Great walking all the way to Meare, although there is one bad bit of access crossing the rhyne south of Bagley at w3w vocal.shook.bonnet where there are a couple of scrub-encroached gates six inches apart which are unopenable. You just have to climb over them together.
Then, after the first farm beyond the village of Mere, the route follows a path alongside a main drainage ditch for several miles with a B-road on the far side if it. This is still lovely country but you hear the traffic all the way and there are about twenty gates, not all of them easy to open, and a few short stretches with lots of stinging nettles which makes it a bit less enjoyable, hence the four stars overall. The path routes along the rampart of the ditch but sometimes you have to drop down into the field below to get to easier-opening or open gates or to escape long grass/nettles. Most of the cows are in the fields along this line and they are often, but not always, fenced off with an electric wire. The worst nettly stretches are around Coldharbour Farm and on the path by the campsite just as you arrive into Glastonbury. It looks as though these two zones do get mown off periodically but beware.
The remainder of the route into town follows a cycle path with a safe crossing over the busy A39.
Another good option, If you are a nature enthusiast and don’t mind walking an extra mile and a half, is to switch to Wedstre Two at Mere and use that route all the way through the fabulous Ham Wall reserve and then use National Cycle Route 3 to get into Glastonbury. I’ve tried that and it is all fine, just take a little care with traffic in the bit through the Park Farm trading estate on the edge of Glastonbury.
