Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

04 Dec 2023I've walked this in two separate stages - Washington to A19, and A19 to Sunderland. The riverside section after the A19 was impassable in part because high tides and recent rain had flooded the path, so we had to divert up through a challenging woodland slope. On the whole a good, easy route for walkers, but not suitable for wheels, but where it gets tricky the mainly off-road coast-to-coast cycle route can be used instead and this is good for wheels. The section just before Sunderland city centre near the Stadium of Light is blocked (November 2023) as a new footbridge is being installed, which will give a better way into Sunderland for the last stretch. An alternative is signposted but means walking alongside busy roads.
