19 Apr 2023 (edited 20 Apr 2023)Walked from Skegness to Wainfleet on a fine spring day with quite a strong easterly wind. This is a better route than it looks on the map. It does involve a lot of road walking, but apart from the A52 which has a good pavement the roads are quiet and I had no safety concerns. The two paths that give a little relief are fairly easy to follow. Lincolnshire is very poor at footpath provision, so it is hard to see a better line that wouldn't be a lot longer.
Having arrived in Skegness by train, I decided to walk down to the beach and back before starting the route, because walking away from the crowds immediately would have felt perverse, and I had not been in Skegness since I was a small child in the 1970s. The beach looks much cleaner now.
Leaving the meeting point by the station, we head east along Wainfleet Road, which we follow out of the town. It is worth crossing to the north side, because the pavement/cycle track that side continues all the way to the junction where we leave the main road. This section is noisy but safe. There is one short section where the track is separated from the road by a few trees. Eventually we follow the pavement right onto Low Road (there is a garage with a shop here). Beyond the houses the pavement stops, but the road is quiet so it feels safe anyway. Beyond the drainage ditch we take the footpath that follows it to the right. This is unsurfaced but easy to follow.
At Pinchbeck Lane we cross the ditch and follow the quiet single track road straight on then left to the junction by Croft Church. It is easier to ignore the GPX and take the right branch at the junction which allows us to cross straight over the junction and go straight on down Washdike Lane, then left onto Croft Lane. These roads are also quiet enough to feel safe.
After a short distance the road turns right and we take the footpath that goes straight on over a little footbridge and along a grassy strip between fences that leads into a caravan park, where the footpath line can easily be lost (if in doubt go straight on and you can't go too far wrong). This leads us to the Old Chequers pub, which does not open until the evening on weekdays (check the opening times before starting if you think you will need it). Here we join another quiet road which we follow into Wainfleet, where the meeting point is by the clock tower on the square.
