06 Oct 2024 Autumn

I walked this route at the beginning of September, from Verwood to Fordingbridge.

Overall I enjoyed this route - following forest tracks, crossing rugged open access land, fields, and what feels like long-established footpaths - all to be experienced within a couple of hours.

I do agree with the previous review that this is not an easy access route for the same points identified. Looking at maps of the area, moreover, it doesn't look as if a more accessible option is even possible between Alderholt and Fordingbridge without a significant amount of detour and road (not lane) walking.

There was evidence of flood in Cranborne Common and perhaps a few other spots that I could see, but had no issues when I followed it. I'm not sure how far an alternative "winter route" could be plotted given this southwestern approach to Fordingbridge resolves to the meeting of the Allen and Avon rivers, but it could be worth exploring, even if no more accessible.

Unlike the previous review I did manage to follow the intended footpath below Midgham Farm, but it was quite overgrown and the entrance onto the footpath (parallel with the track to another farmhouse) all but concealed.

It's worth noting now that the RoW immediately following this is being permanently diverted, replaced with a dedicated track circumnavigating the settlement altogether. It adds perhaps 75m to the original route but, with due credit to Hampshire Council, it feels much better.

Most of what I have mentioned in this review can be found illustrated in the example photo survey I submitted alongside. Below I have recopied the notice of RoW diversion from Hampshire Council, the path I took around Midgham Farm in light of this, and the sight of St Mary's Church when arriving at Fordingbridge.

22 Jun 2024 (edited 23 Jun 2024) Summer

Walked in June ‘24, after a flooded attempt was abandoned earlier in the year.
Varied terrain, minimal road walking and plenty of pubs at the Fordingbridge end.
The heathland between Verwood and Alderholt is a very rutted path. A few stiles or gates to climb between Alderholt and Fordingbridge, along with narrow and overgrown paths.
I’m not a small chap and managed to push an off-road pushchair the whole way, but had to lift it a number of times. Not an easy access route.
Nice walk though

The attached map of Midgeham farm shows the blocked/overgrown paths with a Red mark and the blue dashed line an alternative. But you need to climb a gate.
