25 Sep 2025 (edited 03 Oct 2025)I had such high hopes for this route, but even during the prep I had areas of concern, and so it turned out to be.
Firstly, our first opportuniity to go off road, onto the tracks through Mell Fell Wood, proved to be impossible: it is a private wood, with signs everywhere, and not just the usual 'no trespassers' signs, but also indication that shooting is involved on the property. So, not wanting to trespass or be shot, that was the first red flag.
The second was the odd diversion to Dockray. It's a very small hamlet but it does have a pub, open for food, drink and toilets, but there are no other amenities in the village, and only worth doing if you are in need of refreshment, and even then only in the afternoon or evening.
Lastly, once we're finally in Glenridding, the route then suggests, after a day of going up and down hills, to do one last hill walk to our final destination. Whilst toatlly doable, it's one last push too far, and the route along the road-side footpaths and pavements are much shorter and more direct.
The rest of the route is an absolute delight, however! I've amended the route slightly to correct the errors, and I'll speak more of the pleasures of the walk in that review.
