Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a short route linking Trochry (where there is nothing except possibly a B&B) to Dunkeld, where most facilities are at hand. The route appears to be correctly mapped. It might just about be suitable for robust off road wheelers, providing the steep steps at Dunkeld Bridge were avoided. This could be done by turning right (east) immediately north of the A9 underpass, heading past the tennis courts, towards the A923 and footways into Dunkeld. I've given it 4 stars, as half the route is on tarmac - quiet roads or footways. It is however varied, with views to the River Braan and the River Tay.

From the 'meeting point' at Trochry it is possible to avoid the main road (A822) by using a link path a few yards down the cul de sac. This heads eastwards to the minor road over Newton Bridge. .

This quiet minor road is followed over the Bridge then eastwards to Rumbling Bridge, before which, on a sharp bend, a signposted path leads down through woodland to the Hermitage. This path is rough and rocky in places, and can get quite busy, especially on approaching the Hermitage car park. There are good views of the river Braan, and salmon can occasionally be seen from Ossian's Hall, a lookout building above a waterfall.

At the Hermitage car park there is sometimes a van selling refreshments, but no toilets. Leaving the car park the route briefly takes a footway beside the busy A9, before heading through Inver, where it leaves the lane on a signposted path. It crosses the River Braan on a footbridge and uses an underpass below the A9. A pleasant path beside the rivers, and some steep steps on the east side of the old road bridge takes the route up to the A923. Then along the main street past the shops and cafes in Dunkeld to the car park at the north end of the village where there are toilets. Heading from Dunkeld to Trochry, the start of the route at the steps could easily be missed – see photo. Note that the railway station is in Birnam, on the west side of the river.
