Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route in March 2024 as part of a 3-part loop from Southampton, and the conditions were the same as what the other two reviewers indicated. The walk from the Totton town center through the nature preserve was lovely. The industrial area that followed needed a bit of caution as there was considerable vehicle traffic, but there were safe and marked places to cross. The trek across the athletic field was a bit soggy as it had rained a few days earlier, and it was nice to arrive at the shopping center in Lordshill for a bit of refreshment and battery recharge. :-).

This is a lovely walk, and a good way to get from Lordshill to Totton. However it is not wheelchair accessible for it's full length - part of the section through the Lower Test Nature Reserve has narrow gates at both ends, so although the walking through there is easy, largely on a boardwalk, you wouldn't be able to get in or out in a wheelchair unless you could arrange for the vehicle gates to be open.
The walk starts off slightly uninspiringly through a housing estate and then the sports ground of Oasis Academy. After this one skirts the David Lloyd sports club before crossing the motorway and walking a short distance through an industrial area. Then there is a level crossing (manual barriers for pedestrians) which takes you into the nature reserve - which is lovely, very wild marshland with loads of birds.
On leaving the nature reserve the path crosses the River Test, then it goes through a residential area in Totton, followed by a very nice park and then the shopping centre, where the route ends at the bus stop.
We walked it on a sunny day in March, so it is possible that some of the path would be muddy at other times of year.
No street lighting through the nature reserve, so this is a daylight route.

Most direct route to Totton, following footpaths and all the way. It's a pretty walk across the marshes and fields. Be careful when it is a very high tide as areas of the marshes footpath flood.
