Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

16 Aug 2023I agree with both previous reviewers of this route. It should be excellent. The route shown into (and out of) Monsal Head is not possible. There is no access into nor out of the tunnel except at either end, so there is no reason to go to Monsal Head, just continue along the Monsal trail. The footbridge into Cressbrook is closed. Therefore better to use the access point to-from the trail at Upperdale Farm. This involves a walk along a very quiet road )quieter than the trail when i walked it, between Upperdale and Cressbrook. This route when walking from Bakewell direction can be followed by walking left at a derelict brick shed and electric substation at SK 17820 71941 on the Monsal trail. This is unsigned, I have included a photo. The turn immediately right down the bridleway under the bridge to Upperdale. When walking toward Bakewell follow the bridleway from Upperdale until you go under the Monsal trail bridge then take the unmarked path on your left onto the trail. Route shown in screenshot.

31 Mar 2023This should be a great route, and still can be, but 2 minor diversions are required from the plotted Slow Ways route.
Firstly the plotted route shows a turning to Monsal Head that is impossible (you are in a tunnel!) however this is not an essential turn and you can just carry on along the Monsal Trail. Secondly the footbridge taking you into Cressbrook Dale is closed for safety reasons. It has been for over a year now and there is no evidence that it will be repaired.
The footbridge closure can be avoided by taking an earlier path and crossing the river at Upperdale (SK177 721) with a small additional bit of road walking.

22 Jun 2022Two issues with this route.
There is no link from inside the tunnel to Monsal Head. This can be overcome by staying in the tunnel and making a there and back to Monsal Head from the west side.
The permissive path at Water-Cum-Jolly Dale has a bridge over the weir to Cressbrook this has been classed as unsafe and is closed. Leave the trail and use the road.

16 Aug 2023should you wish to visit Monsal Head, and there is a fine pub there. There is a path up to it on the West end of the tunnel.
