I agree with the previous reviewer that the section between Mansfield Station and Sheepbridge Lane is enclosed and has a steep flight of steps over the railway. It is not unsafe, but it doesn't feel safe ! I have posted another route with an alternative to this Mansfield section.

I walked this urban route Mansfield to Sutton. Plotting is good but a change has occurred so read on. A disappointing start but the approach to Sutton is fine. A mix of surfaces but no fields, some pavements along quiet roads, lots of refreshment opportunities on this short walk and a few points of interest.

I rather hope an alternative escape from Mansfield can be devised. Steps on the bridge over the railway lead to a quite narrow path enclosed by high railings, the surface has been recently relaid with tarmac so is good but it will need a lot of side vegetation trimming to maintain a clear path. Not a route I would do again by choice. The one highlight was a bridge over Sheepbridge Lane which is in a deep cutting.

The path improves a little along the River Maun through Oakham Local Nature Reserve and an impressive water fall from a weir adds sight and sound interest. Glimpses of the mill pond can be seen but access is reserved for anglers only. The next bit may be correct on old maps but wrong on the ground. A huge bridle bridge has been constructed to cross the railway, I suspect the crossing was on the level, now closed. Stay on the track and double back over the bridge to reach Kings Mill Reservoir.

At the end of the bridge make sure you detour just slightly to inspect the Kings Mill Viaduct built in 1817 to carry the Mansfield and Pinxton Railway. A coffee shop looms followed by a supermarket, called Morrisons at present but about to sell out to, can I say, the Yanks. The walk by the water is popular on a good surface.

Safe light controlled crossing of a busy road then more food and drink with that Scottish takeaway before pavements along quiet roads and finally a surfaced wide and open path alongside the park. I was ready to sit and eat sandwiches, but not a seat in sight.
