21 Dec 2022 (edited 23 Dec 2022)Walked from Kirkby to Sutton on a mild winter morning (the first picture shows an interesting Christmas decoration at Kirkby). A good direct route, easy apart from a few steps but a little dull, perhaps unavoidably.
Leaving the Kirkby meeting point, we walk west along Station Road past the railway station and take the second right turn beyond (Forster Street). This leads to West Park, which we cross diagonally right on a surfaced path which continues alongside the railway. Just before Southwell Lane the path turns left and goes up a flight of steps. This road can be a little busy, and there is no assisted crossing, so take care. On the far side of the railway we turn right and follow the steps down to the left before the railway bridge. The path starts off surfaced but is unsurfaced but fairly good beyond the start of the old colliery country park, where the surfaced path turns left (see photo 5).
At Penny Emma Lane we cross and go a short distance right to find the way into the odd section of fenced off road that Ken mentions in his review. At the far end of this road, our path goes diagonally left and becomes narrower, enclosed by the fences of a building under construction. The way forward over the wider A38 bridge is obvious, and once we reach Hardwick Lane the rest of the route follows pavements into Sutton centre (High Pavement is best crossed at the lights at the north east end).

14 Oct 2022I walked Kirkby to Sutton, no stiles but there are steps and no cattle. Pretty direct after a passing of the rail station. Very pleasant through West Park. Old rail route may feel a bit isolated in such an urban location and is unlit. Interesting section south east (SE) of safe A38 bridge crossing, a section of unused road with gates either end which looks like there is no way out, but there is. Strange, this Slow Way has three good reviews but has been flagged for access, not by me.

12 Aug 2022I walked this route from Sutton to Kirkby.
There's a good stretch at the start leaving Sutton along pavement. After crossing the A38 on a footbridge, the route enters a long stretch along off-road paths that is quite fantastic for walking. The approach to Kirkby is fine and does the job for a Slow Ways route, taking you past the train station and Aldi and down the High Street into town.
Overall, a great route.
