Description

I was attempting StoSta Two, starting at Stafford, but was forced to divert along the Two Saints Way, due to a prohibitively damaged footbridge no longer crossing the River Trent. This is what I walked. It is pretty similar to the original StoSta One, but without the unnecessary diversion to Burston, and considerably more accurate

02 Feb 2024 Winter

I started from Stafford on a dry day at the start of February, but there had been a fair bit of rain during the previous few weeks.
The first 25% was mostly an easy former railway line (including Stafford Common Station platforms hidden beneath vegetation). It was very straightforward except for one bridge where the tarmac path was under 2-3cm of water. The exit onto the A513 was via steps, and crossing this busy main road wasn’t too bad as there were gaps in the traffic.
The next 35% of the route was largely across fields, but with some quiet farm lanes too. There were expansive views in the section near Newbuildings Cottage. There was quite a lot of electric fencing but it wasn’t in the way. The tiny section of the single track Yarlet Lane by Woodhill Farm was surprisingly busy with traffic, all travelling towards the north end of Stafford, presumably a rat run avoiding queues for traffic lights or something. I was happy that there were no cows in any of the fields, although some of the fields after Woodhill Farm were very wet. The stiles, with one exception, were well maintained.
Near Upper Burston Bridge there was a bench where I sat to have my lunch.
There was boardwalk past a pond (more mud, potential flooding, and lots of birdlife) before the main section of Two Saints Way (another 20% of the route) which was a very easy path to walk. It was also nice to arrive at the canal for the final 20% of the walk into Stone. The first bridge was very low, and there was a short, steep cobbled path past one of the locks. The route passed the oldest canal boat hire company (founded 1948) and a brewery along here, and there was a plaque celebrating the local canal history. A small footbridge over the canal and a large, stepped footbridge over the railway led to the end of the route at the delightful Stone Station.
This was a varied and very pleasant route, although it was often accompanied by the distant sound of traffic or factories.
