Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Srsaunders

14 Oct 2023 Autumn

Walked this route on 9/10/23. It's a nice route for getting up and over the South Downs, "cutting off the corner" of the A283 and A24 and ending in Findon which is a lovely little place.
There are some small but significant problems with the route though:
1) the start from Storrington goes up someone's drive and attempts to pass through a fence - easily bypassed alongside the allotments but it needs to change.
2) The route near the top of the Downs shows a strange deviation into a field with no way back, while running parallel to a very obvious path. Just follow the path.
3) Right at the top of the ridge adjacent to the South Downs Way there's a strange little dogleg which leaves you staring at a fence with no way through. Again easily corrected.
4) Most seriously, you have to cross Long Furlong which is a very fast and busy road, so I wouldn't recommend this for small children or anyone not feeling agile. The route is unclear as to the crossing point - I git it wrong first time and had to walk along the verge to find the right place - not for the fainthearted.

I've included numbered photos of the route I actually took at these 4 points to help with corrections.

You also have to cross the A24 which is also very busy, but at there is a crossing point, you can pause in the middle, and the route goes the right way.

Bostal Boy

15 Oct 2022 Autumn

I pioneered this route as the first leg of a Storrington to Worthing trek via Findon.

This was a lovely quiet walk across the Downs, well away from traffic . The path climbs up a chalk bostal path from Chantry Lane to the side of Sullington Hill, passing a very distinct Bronze Age cross dyke on right hand side on the way up.

At the top of the hill, the route touches the South Downs Way by a small barn before heading off eastward along a fenceline to reach a gate and a track after about half a mile. This track and the path from the barn (easily followed along cycle tracks) is a restricted by-way which goes all the way to the A280. The path is not exactly as marked on the map, but is well waymarked. Follow the signs and you'll be fine.

Great views of the iron age hill fort at Cissbury to your left as you head towards Findon. At the A280, the route picks up the Monarch's Way which it follows along the bottom of a hill, past a small camp site, the church and Findon Place to the A24 then across to the village of Findon.

There are a couple of stiles at the Storrington end and two busy roads to cross at the Findon end. No refreshment opportunities along the way. Fields of sheep and cattle to be expected. Really nothing to fault with this route.
