Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Hiking Historian
25 Jun 2023A good route between the two towns, with a lovely green section in the middle.
Starting in St Helens, we move away from the station and onto the old canal, with its earth and loose stone towpath. Past Pocket Nook, the route is supposed to follow the canal north before looping around east, but it's possible to cut the bend using footpaths and a road passing past the industrial estate.
The route ahead is mostly along the canal, with one road crossing. As we head along both the canal and Sankey Brook, it becomes more rural, with nature-filled reedbeds. Eventually, we take an earth track towards Haydock. Hitting the road, we then turn along a footpath on an old railway, before passing through a sports pitch. We rejoin the main road, and finish at the library.
A good route, and mostly accessible to all, with a good green midsection.
