Description
I have replotted StaWig One, making it easier to follow on the ground, by using more obvious paths. Also I’ve made more use of Mesnes Park

25 Jun 2023Relativity easy to find the start of this walk, Starting in a nice cul de sac. The path is mostly flat, with small gradual slopes and a good view of distant hills and a large field. Due to the heat this summer it was nice to have shade provided by the trees. The path continues through a small stretch of overgrown nettles and brambles until reaching the more rural side of Wigan.
After a few minutes there’s a path through to Mesnes park, a refreshing hilly park with a café, play park, ponds and many ducks. Upon leaving the park you arrive 5 minutes away from the centre of Wigan. When completing the walk you only a couple steps away from the many café’s, restaurants, shops and the train station.

25 Jun 2023This was a good walk. There was a short section off Gidlow lane that was a bit overgrown but passable as we kept our arms up away from the nettles. But the rest of the walk was straightforward, plenty off road until the outskirts of Wigan is reached then a pleasant stretch through Mesnes park and on to Wallgate.

07 Feb 2023The route started from Standish with a bit of a slog along the busy A49. There were a couple of crossing places with islands though. The raised woodland path soon afterwards was very nice, and I passed a man with a kestrel. The route followed a branch off to the left, closer to the stream, whereas StaWig One ploughed on through mud.
One reaching the gravelled track the route was easy to follow, so although it was a bit longer, it was no slower. At OS Grid Ref: SD 57092 08048 the curved path was a bit sunken and rubbly, and I discovered that this was a former colliery railway line. In fact along here there were several interesting looking industrial heritage remnants.
At OS Grid Ref: SD 57456 07829 there was a fork in the track, enforced by a significant wire fence. This route followed the track on the right.
Mesnes Park was a very pleasant open space just before reaching the centre of Wigan, with a rather nice ice cream café in an octagonal pavilion.
