Description
Alternative route from Stalybridge to Mossley following the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
Note that the towpath passes through Scout Tunnel which is 188m long. There is a secure hand rail but the tunnel is dark with uneven cobbles underfoot.
To avoid the tunnel, cross the canal at either lock 11W or 12W, follow the riverside path and re-join the tow path at the next lock. This includes a short flight of rough steps

11 Mar 2024This is a pleasant canal walk between two stations on the Manchester to Huddersfield railway line.
Very easy to navigate and relatively accessible. The tow path is partially surfaced but was wet and muddy in places when walked on a damp March day. The section through the canal tunnel adds interest but there is a simple alternative following the river bank if needed.
The buffet bar on Stalybridge station is highly recommended.

07 Mar 2024A pleasant walk mainly along the towpath by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal on the edge of the Peak District. Very tranquil on a winters afternoon. A long tunnel - take a torch!.

20 Feb 2024This route was basically a nice walk along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, and included several locks, a pylon astride the canal, some interesting canal and industrial relics, and most excitingly, a canal tunnel to negotiate! Scout Tunnel was about 180 metres long, with a cobbled towpath and a sturdy railing, carved out of the rock. We were glad of torches/phone lights!
The towpath was muddy in places, but very pretty at the northern end of the route. There were some shallow steps under the A6018, but I think it would be possible to avoid them by crossing the road rather than going under it.
I enjoyed this route.

11 Mar 2024I must have used the 'snap to path' feature to plot this one as I didn't actually spot the tunnel! I've added details of a simple alternative to the description in case anyone doesn't fancy it.

11 Mar 2024I didn't think the river bank alternative to the tunnel was very obvious or simple, because of being at a higher level than the towpath. I think you'd have to cross the canal at the lock to the north of the tunnel, and to the south you would have to go over the top of the tunnel and use a sloping path down the embankment. It does look possible though.
