Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

04 Dec 2024As noted by the other reviewers, this is an excellent route with some stunning views from the top of Hartshead Pike.
The paths are wet, muddy and slippery in places, particularly the steep descent into Mossley.

14 Apr 2022One of my favourite walks in the area. I actually reviewed this as SPRMOS1 originally, not being quite sure how much deviation was needed to constitute a new route. Anyway very happy to give it it's third review. I haven't really got much to add to what the other two reviewers have to say. One very minor suggestion is that in wet weather walkers might like to stay on Lane Head Road rather than taking the bridleway up to Hartshead Pike as this can get very wet underfoot. Also as the road is higher up the hillside it has slightly better views over Oldham and Manchester. But that's just a suggestion.

30 Jan 2022This was a very pleasant walk on a sunny day in January, starting off from the main road through Grotton but very quickly entering a hidden green valley. Along lanes, paths and fields, with one quite slippery descent. The views from Hartshead Pike were far reaching with Manchester in the distance. Interesting wall art on the road opposite Mossley station. No access issues (unlike Sprmoss one).

16 Jan 2022The route leaves Grotton and Springhead to cross a pretty wooded valley with well-made paths, popular with dog walkers. It then crosses up through a field on an obvious path, to a quiet road. It passes the padlocked gate of route SprMos One which has access problems, and instead continues and turns up another quiet road, and then turns off onto a track which was wet in places. Soon, you can see the monument that marks Hartshead Pike. It is well worth the small detour to the monument as the views from here are excellent (even in the hazy weather we had).
There was a mobile coffee van on leaving the Pike. The route headed down between farm buildings and across a field (bit muddy!) and under a line of pylons. There was another field path shortly, off the next road, which gave great views of Mossley, but then headed steeply downhill to a pub, and was very muddy and rutted.
The route down through the town passed a nice modern church building, continued downhill, and then zigzagged through parkland to come out onto Stamford Road and down to the station, past several interesting buildings.
This was a very nice route and appeared to be popular with locals.
