Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

31 Jan 2022Graded one star as blocked access (padlocked gate) and no right of way on the OS map at grid ref 962040.

16 Jan 2022As pointed out by Jbeckton, this route has access problems grid reference 962040 where a padlocked gate blocks the route. I snuck around the side of this and could see no trodden route across the field. On the OS Map there is no public right of way from here all the way to 964035, therefore this route should not be verified. I have walked and uploaded the very pleasant route which Jbeckton described (as Sprmos Two) which is substantially different from Sprmos One.

14 Apr 2022Thanks. Just got round to adding a review to SPRMOS2 which should give it its snail.

12 Sep 2021This is a lovely route with some spectacular views across Oldham and Manchester. However part of the route suggested on the slow ways map appears to be no longer extant. Fortunately there is a simple diversion which I think is actually a better route. Leaving the 'bus terminus at Grotton (not actually Springhead) head down Oldham Road past a terrace of houses and turn left down Old Mill Lane. This swings round into a small car park. Leave this past a house and follow the track round until it crosses a small footbridge. Keep going over a stile and follow a grassy track along a field until you reach Thornley Lane.
Here we find the path onwards (as marked on the map) is no longer extant. There is the start of a track on the other side of Thornley Lane but it is blocked by a fence and there is no evidence of a path on the other side. (Photo 3)
Fortunately there is an easy diversion. Turn right along Thornley Lane until you reach St. Agnes Church and School. Here, turn left up Lane Head Road past a former pub which has a clock painted on the front permanently showing 28 minutes past 11 (it's always 2 minutes to opening time!). (Photo 4) Follow Lane Head Road and where it swings round to the left take a bridleway which heads off to the right before some houses. After passing Hartshead Pike, (photo 5) a local landmark with some panoramic views across the Lancashire and Cheshire plains, this eventually rejoins Lane Head Road. Follow this to a Public Footpath (photo 6) sign on the left which after rejoining the non-existent path from Thornley Lane, takes you down a rather precipitous path which comes out in a pub car park in the small town of Mossley. Carry on down the road to the traffic lights and head down Stamford St. The Slow Ways map suggests following Stamford St. which ends at Mossley Rail Station. A quieter alternative is to take the footpath that leaves Stamford St where it curves to the right. This brings you out on Manchester Road where you can turn right and walk the last few yards to the station
In summary an excellent short walk with good transport links at both ends. Not sure that the diversion is major enough to make it a separate route though.

12 Jan 2022Lovely review and idea for an alternative, but your diversion is VERY MAJOR, in that more than half of it is different from the original.
