Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

30 May 2023I agree with other two reviews. A safe but dull route, almost all on urban pavements beside busy roads. Links A to B, but nothing else to commend it.

30 Jun 2022I use this route regularly as I live off Northumberland Avenue to go to Reading or Spencers Wood. I wouldn't choose to walk it if I didn't need to get to those places as I agree with the previous reviewer that it has "little to commend it".

15 Aug 2021Spencers Wood to Reading (Sperea 1) review.
A walk almost entirely beside roads with little to commend it.
It starts by a post office in Spencers Wood and heads north and then northeast to a M4 footbridge. The Six Bells pub is just before the bridge (Photo 1).
A detour up the Whitley Woods Lane leads to the Brutalist-style Shire Hall, once the offices of Berkshire County Council.
The route passes through Whitley along the Northumberland Avenue to Christ Church (Photo 2), and on into Central Reading.
This Slow Way meets the criteria of joining Reading with Spencers Wood. I can’t readily see a better route, although it’s not a walk I’d care to take again.
