Description
A route that reflects the way I actually walked between Solihull and the National Exhibition Centre. Judging by the amount of roadworks around it, I'm not convinced by its permanence. Not accessible to all. Although not dangerous, it is quite adventurous towards the NEC end

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jun 2024More Ballard than Wainwright this is very much the psychogeographical end of Slow Ways. I started from Solihull. The route, which takes you from the centre, through the suburbs to the countryside follows pavements and footpaths and is very easy to follow. Having passed the Land Rover factory, you leave the main road and follow a very straight footpath almost as far as Bickenhill. This is where the adventure begins, as there appears to be some major road building going on and the footpaths, sometimes diverted, often overgrown, inch around the sites. Their existence are mostly acknowledged in safety signs. Following the route of the footpath, and fitted around the fence, I joined the verge by the B4438. The pavements, featured on Google street view, had disappeared, but lanes were coned off. Strangely, where there were pavements, they were fenced off! Reaching Birmingham International, I was relieved, things were easier from here. But why I would be walking 1km further was a mystery. In one spot, bus, coach, train and plane passengers all converge. So why isn't this the meeting place? I suspect that when the reviews are done, 99.9% of journeys will start or end here. The final section is along the empty walkways to the taxi shelter/ car drop off outside the main hall. This is a walk in a part of the world where people aren't expected to walk. Not accessible and in a constantly changing landscape. There some places to stop, but not many. Links to trains and buses in Solihull and as mentioned, trains, buses, coaches and planes 1km from the NEC node. For adventurous types only!.
